- You don’t know anything about marketing. Your learning has just started.
- You need to find yourself a mentor. (go for substance over image)
- Money should not be your priority at this time. Hint: Go for learning over cha ching.
- Start general and then specialise. Your goal must be to become famous for one thing.
- Remember marketing is not advertising.
- The best way to learn is to do grunge work. Get your hands dirty and do stuff that’s beneath your dignity.
- Live in the field. Take up residence in Hilo, in rum shops or anywhere your company’s customers are.
- You need to keep learning. The internet makes it easy. Read at least one marketing book a quarter.
- Your emotional intelligence is more important than your technical intelligence. Marketing is essentially ‘people business”.
- You must get involved in your community. You have a responsibility to make the world a better place.
