BBQ Fundraiser for Candice Spence-Villafana

At age 42, Candice is a beacon of strength for her three beautiful daughters, aged 11 and 13 (including twins), navigating the world as a single mother with grace and unwavering dedication.

Candice’s journey took a challenging turn when she developed diabetes during pregnancy, a condition that has since cast a long shadow over her health. The years following have been marked by a series of medical battles, each more daunting than the last. In 2016, the first of these trials emerged, with diabetic nerve damage setting the stage for what would become a relentless fight for her wellbeing.

October 2022 brought a heart-wrenching setback when Candice suffered a detached retina, leading to significant vision loss in one eye. As she grappled with this new reality, life dealt another blow with the passing of her beloved mother in January 2023, for whom Candice had been the primary caregiver. Mere weeks after saying goodbye to her mother, Candice’s remaining vision began to fade, leaving her in a world of near darkness, her eyesight irreparably damaged. She is now almost completely blind.

Amidst these trials, Candice faced yet another formidable challenge. In December 2023, a persistent infection, fuelled by diabetic nerve damage, led to surgery to remove a substantial amount of septic tissue – about 20% of the foot – and the amputation of a toe. By January 2024, the infection claimed another toe, further testing her spirit and resilience.

Candice’s close friends, who recognize her incredible spirit and the unfair hand she’s been dealt, rallied together to support her. The cost of these life-saving surgeries and the associated care at a private medical facility amounted to $62,695, a sum that now stands as a towering hurdle on Candice’s path to recovery.

With Candice on extended medical leave since February 2023 and her employment prospects uncertain given her visual impairment, the financial strain is immense. Although she is navigating the complex process of securing benefits through Social Services and NIB, the road ahead remains unpredictable.

Today, I appeal to you, to join in supporting Candice and her daughters during this unimaginably challenging time. Our goal is to raise $62,695 to alleviate the financial burden of Candice’s medical expenses, ensuring she can focus on her health and her family without the looming stress of debt. Every donation, no matter the size, brings Candice one step closer to stability and peace of mind.
