Kenny and Dianne Phillips are doing something we thought could not be done. They have found a way to make a radio station playing only local music financially sustainable or so it looks. As far as I can tell (without knowing their business), they did three things that others who failed before them did not do:
- They run a tight ship; low fixed and variable costs
- They use the Internet like no other station present or past; they have in a very short space of time built up communities in the USA, Canada and UK through their online LIVE stream
- Their revenue is not solely dependent on TT sources. ( they earnin’ foreign exchange)
WACK Radio 90.1fm boasts in their Goggle descriptor that they are culture krazy. “True defenders of Trinidad & Tobago culture.” And Trinis missing home as well as local culture vultures are lapping it up. If by chance we needed any more evidence of the power of the Internet, then we should look no further than opposite the TCL Skiffle Bunch Panyard where Kenny, Dianne and the WACK Family put out their home grown produce, morning, noon and night everyday.
My brother Keith and his wife Lisa in Canada know more about WACK programming than I do. But I’m a recent convert and since their reception is excellent I’m likely to spend more and more time wacking out. Anything can be achieved with determination and the right plan. Kenny and Dianne seem to have them both.
