Next year we celebrate 50 years of independence, 50 years of leaving our mother’s house and launching out on our own. When we turned 25 in 1987, Calypsonian Funny asked the profound question “How yuh feel?”. And I believe as we approach 50, Funny’s question should be asked again. How do you feel about us turning 50 next year?
Here’s how I rate our performance, using our nation’s watchwords as a guide:
- Good: Our Tolerance; relatively speaking we’re not doing too badly managing our diversity
- Bad: Our Productivity; we are not doing very well here based on recent empirical evidence
- Ugly: Our Discipline; we’ve gone backwards since 1962 and we need some strong medicine
Do you agree with my assessment? How do you think we are we doing? Where are we heading? Should we have stayed with our mother? Will our grand-children inherit a better place? How yuh feel?
