We love pan in T&T, especially when it’s free.
In the past few weeks there have been a few priceless moments for pan jumbies like myself. Like the Trinidad All Stars’ Sparrow Medley just before mid-night on Nelson Street last Sunday. Or Renegades’ “All ah we is one Family” on d’ Avenue, which Mr Daly referred to as “an unforgettable moment”…”a spontaneous hymn to unity.” Or the timeless Penny Lane that, by itself, would have made my Fatima History teacher Mr. Holman famous, if that was the only piece he ever arranged for Starlift.
Last night Carib Playboyz closed the Tragarete Road speedway and opened the steelband vault to visitors. And all for free. The thing is we can’t continue to enjoy something for free, if we are not prepared to pay for it most of the time.
So when Birdsong hosts their annual Concert we need some of the thousands of pan lovers I saw last night to put their hands in their pockets. Solo Harmonites has a concert coming up. And so does Republic Bank Exodus on the 23 September. And so does N&M Trinidad All Stars with their bi-annual Classical Jewels in November. And there are many more.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. We are loving pan to death in Trinidad and Tobago.
