We always talk about service in Trinidad & Tobago, or lack thereof. I am not one to do a broad brushstroke as I have encountered businesses that have impressed me with the quality of service they provided to me. I list my top 3.

Grill Hut
Back in the late 1990’s or early 2000’s, I purchased at Grill Hut (Now Hassan Gyros), located near to Republic Bank on Ariapita Avenue, a meal and a Coke in the bottle. After applying my dressing and as I was about to move with my lunch to eat on the bench outside, the drink toppled off the tray and fell to the ground with a resounding crash. Before I could say, “Mammy!”, the woman behind the counter exclaimed, “Oh no!” then immediately went into the refrigerator and gave me a replacement Coca-Cola, free of charge. I was surprised by this gesture and certainly remembered.

HP Store
I recently bought a new laptop at the HP Store at Trincity Mall. Two young men worked the floor while the senior employee handled the cash register. Now, it is no secret that the manner or lack thereof of our youth irks me. So when I am in the presence of young people with old school decorum, I become so excited I’m just short of doing cartwheels. The young man who attended to me continually referred to me as “Sir”, answering each and every one of my questions with proficiency and never tiring of the many questions from my dinosaur brain. At the counter, the “Sir” reference continued. The senior staff member took his time to explain the need for me to register my product with HP online so that I can get repair services should I need it. He also informed me on accessories that I should have to extend the life of my machine and the battery. Some of them they carried, some they did not, yet he told me about all. I left the store feeling as though they cared more for my satisfaction than the sale.

DirecTV
Approximately two years ago I signed up for DirecTV. I spoke with a young man on the phone to sign up. The following day, I got a call from his supervisor who asked me questions about his performance as he was a rookie. These follow up phone calls would continue each time a service person would visit to fix a problem. This added to their satisfactory product offering makes DirecTV my top pic where “ServiceTT” is concerned. Should they find a solution for good reception during heavy cloud cover, I would nominate them for a national award.
