“Our day will come. And we’ll have everything. Our day will come. If we just wait a while.” These are some of the lyrics from a Ruby and the Romantics classic.
As we close 2011, I wonder when will our day come; that is, Trinidad and Tobago’s day. When will we “do the work” that Pat Bishop always urged of her students. When will we develop our own solutions driven from the ground up by a “community of communities”, as imagined by Lloyd Best. When will we figure out that there is no quick fix or ultimate leader with magical powers who will lead us into the land where there are “No tears for us…..Think love and wear a smile”.
When will T&T’s day come?
- Our day will come when we encourage dissent and don’t marginalise the dissenter
- Our day will come when we reward people based on performance
- Our day will come when we get more disciplined. Obey rules and enforce the law
- Our day will come when we embrace the richness of the oil drum and not only the value of the oil
- Our day will come when we start saying “good morning and thank you” again
- Our day will come when we stop being mimic men
“Our dreams have magic
Because we’ll always stay
In love this way.
Our day will come.
Our day will come.”
