All that glitters is not Gold Cup

Gold Cup

Even if we won the Gold Cup I still believe we need to re-think our football strategy of building from the top. I’m hoping that the newly re-branded TTFA is not going down the same road that we have for the past 30 years.

I.e. focusing our resources and attention on the Senior National Team and leaving all else to fend for themselves. 2018 is 5 years away so we really need to start moulding some 18 year-olds and also shaping a feeder program towards 2022.

I know of some national youth teams in the past who had no funding even to buy ice for the water cooler much less have the proper grounds, nutrition, equipment and coaching staff to help them develop.

I know we are an instant gratification society and football is just following the same path. But without a long term youth development plan and a more credible domestic league, I fear we are doomed to looking every four years for a saviour coach with big credentials and 8 foreign based pros to give us hope.

Surely there must be better way.
