America under the gun

So, the National Rifle Association in the United States of America is running an ad campaign against President Obama’s plans to stiffen gun control laws.

Honestly, I just do not get the heavy resistance that some Americans put up against gun control. With the usual cry of having the right to bear arms, this sector blinds itself to the argument that CNN’s Piers Morgan has been making for the longest time and more so now, ” For what reason should an average person have a semiautomatic weapon?” He does not challenge the second amendment that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms, as far as it a hand gun or a shot gun. When it comes to the mass killing machines, he does, and I agree with him.

Now I am not going to join that debate, simply because I am not an American. I do, however relate the issue to our society. Not too long ago, with the wave of violent crime we were (and continue to) experiencing, there we some folks here saying that we, the average citizen, should be able to buy guns to protect ourselves. Fortunately this cry has gone nowhere. We are a people who like to adopt other people’s culture/style/ideology/technology without looking at the underlying negative side, thus we adopt their problems too.

I like it that we, who are considered Third World, do not have easy access to guns (us not in the protective services and those at the other side of it). Other than the mass murders with the semi automatic guns in America, the lesser lethal guns have also been the vehicle for suicides, accidental shootings of self or family members, and of course, crimes of passion.

Again, I am amazed at the way in which the folks in the “developed” world turn a blind eye to the pain that their hobby has caused many families and hope that we do not follow.
