As our nation approaches its 50th birthday, I share Lord Kitchener’s tribute to Janelle Commissiong when in 1977 she became the first woman of colour to win the Miss Universe title. What a proud day it was for Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and the black diaspora.
