It’s getting harder to spot a Trini.

Under 17 brotherly love
Under 17 brotherly love

Here I am in the Stadium today with my Nigerian brothers

Today I met a Prince. Prince and about 30 of his friends came to support their team today in their Under 17 World Cup football game against North Korea.  And what a beautiful bunch of guys.  They were more Trini than Trinis and when one of them said “We’ll beat them in the north, we’ll beat them in the south, we’ll beat them in Tobago”,  I realised there was more in the mortar than the pestle.  You see these Nigerians make Trinidad their home.  Most of them work as security personnel so we’ve met them in different places.  They have embraced Trinidad’s love for a party and our rainbow country.

They have their own chants, just as we have ours.  One of theirs goes “over d’ bar, over d’ bar, over d’ bar” whenever the opposing team approaches their goal.  And when their team visits the opposing goal area they chant;  “Inside da net, inside da net, inside da net”.

The love fest ends on Wednesday coming though, when T&T meets Nigeria at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.  The Prince had us all in stitches when he promised us a “cut arse”.  It’s getting harder to spot a Trini.
