It is healthy to view things from a different angle. Sometimes new perspectives are discovered or what is already known is strengthen. In advertising, we send out messages to the public believing that our message best communicates the desire of the client and connects with our audience effectively. Curiosity got the better of me as I wondered how the public felt about the material that we put out there. I therefore asked a few friends who have no involvement in advertising, some questions on local ads they have seen.  Here are their responses, as they expressed them:

Q: Which local television ad do you think is the best ever made?

A: – Lucozade stick man wining.
– The drugs cartoons.
– Tatil Insurance – “People are people – yuh know what ah mean.”
– Brigo DET ad: “DET to the roaches…” ‘cause it re-enforced the name of the product and
what it does, but it was entertaining.
– The Guardian.

Q: Which local television ad do you think is the worst ever made?

A: – Stamina. Stamina. Stamina man.
– Spranalang Double Zee.
– Synery’s – personification of sports in its ad.
– Diana Jub Jub with Nicki Crosby…so annoying.
– FCB, with the children and that funny music.

Q:  They say sex sells. Was there any local ad using sex appeal that caused you to buy the
product?

A:  –  Not that I can think of.
–  Nope.
–  No. Local ads do not emanate sex appeal effectively.
–  No.
–  Yes.

Q:  Which local radio ad do you think is the best ever made?

A:   – Chinese laundry used to do some Water Colours ads and even though I hated the fete, I
felt like attending each year I heard the ads.
–  It was for a party. Can’t remember which one though.
–  Ads which promote carnival fetes.
– “Cornelius!” for Kiss Corn Bread.
–  Tatil ad with the woman speaking.

Q:  Which local radio ad do you think is the worst ever made?

A:   – None comes to mind.
–  For the ministry of culture.
–  Kiss – Cornbread ad.
–  I don’t know.
–  The bumble be sting meh in meh eye

Q:  Which brand would you buy even if it was not advertised?

A:  – The one that looks attractive on the shelf.  The second factor I consider is cost.
–  Converse.
–  Sony products.
–  Neutrogena.
–  Nokia.

Q: What attracts your eye when you see a print ad?

A:    –  The graphics. Colour helps though.
–  The colours.
–  Usage of graphics, photos and colours.
–  Bright Colours.
–  Graphics

Q:    What do you dislike about local ads (print, radio or TV)?

A:  –  Radio and TV – poor acting.
–  Copy cat ads.
–  When there is focus on mimicking foreign ads. – shows lack of innovation.
–  Radio & TV ads are often too loud.
–  Straying from content

Q: Which local brand would you say is a symbol of Trinidad & Tobago?

A: –  Carib
–  Lucozade
–  Carib & Stag
–  Crix
–  Ibis
